World IN BRIEF : MYANMAR : Official Denies That Nobel Winner Is Ill

A Myanmar official denied that leading dissident Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, is critically ill. Tin Htoon, first secretary at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, said: “She is fine, safe in her own home.” He denied that she is on a hunger strike. The Nobel awards committee in Oslo said Friday that Suu Kyi, 46, has been on a hunger strike to protest conditions of her arrest. The Norwegian news agency NTB, quoting a group opposed to the military junta in Myanmar, formerly Burma, reported that Suu Kyi was in grave condition.
