ROUNDUP : Holt Scores 55 in Loyola’s Wild 210-176 Intrasquad Game

Senior guard Craig Holt scored a game-high 55 points, including 13 three-point baskets, as the Gray team defeated the Crimson, 210-176, Saturday in the annual Loyola Marymount intrasquad basketball game at Gersten Pavilion.

Junior forward Brian McCloskey added 40 points and sophomore guard Ross Richardson scored 36 for the Gray. Senior guard Terrell Lowery led the Crimson with 54 points and 11 assists.

The game was played in two standard 20-minute halves as the teams combined for 386 points, the most ever scored in a Loyola intrasquad game.

“I was pleased with the overall effort,” second-year Coach Jay Hillock said. “We need to fine-tune a few areas, but as you can see, this is an extremely athletic team.”

The Gray team, which led, 96-80, at halftime, scored its 200th point on a three-point basket by Richardson with 2:23 left to play. It rendered the Loyola scoreboard, which goes only to 199 points, useless.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team did all it could to remain alive in the race for one of six NCAA Division II playoff berths Saturday by defeating previously unbeaten UC San Diego, 2-0, in Carson.

The Toros end the regular season 15-4-1. Dominguez Hills entered the week ranked sixth nationally and has won three times since then. But that does not guarantee that it will hold on to its sixth-place position and earn a berth in the tournament.

Selection of the tournament teams and sites will be announced on Monday.

Regina Marie Eroen of Loyola Marymount won the women’s individual title Saturday at the West Coast Conference cross-country championships at Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, Calif.

Eroen, who placed seventh in the final last year, covered the five-kilometer course in 19:15.

Portland won the team title and Loyola finished sixth out of eight teams.

Portland also won the men’s team title, with Loyola finishing third.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team was defeated by Portland, 13-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-5, in a West Coast Conference match Saturday in Portland.
