Four ranch buildings burned to the ground Tuesday in a fire that started in an orange grove north of Moorpark, Ventura County fire officials said.
About 96 firefighters, including 10 engine companies, were called at 12:52 p.m. to the blaze north of Stockton Road and just west of a chicken ranch owned by Egg City.
Two bulldozers and two water-dumping helicopters were also called to fight the fire, Dispatcher Alison Schember said.
In addition to buildings on the ranch, the fire scorched two acres of brush and some discarded tires, mattresses and camper shells in a private dump.
Schember said fire crews had contained the blaze by about 2:30 p.m., but decided to let it burn itself out.
Arson Investigator Peter Cronk said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
