SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION VI FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : University Extends Shutout Streak to Three With 34-0 Victory

Senior Jerry Apana scored three touchdowns to lead University to a 34-0 victory over Savanna in a Division VI playoff game Friday night at Irvine Stadium.

University (7-5), which recorded the first playoff victory in school history last week, scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break open the game and advance to the semifinals Friday night against Tustin.

The Trojans posted their third consecutive shutout and have not been scored on in 14 quarters.

Apana, who rushed for 79 yards in 15 carries, scored on a four-yard run with 5 minutes 4 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give University a 7-0 lead.

Savanna (7-4-1) wasted a chance to tie the game late in the second quarter.

The Rebels advanced the ball to the University one-yard line with 15 seconds remaining in the half. With no timeouts remaining, the Rebels elected to run the ball and Jeff Ragos was stopped for no gain as time ran out.

University then went ahead, 14-0, on a four-yard touchdown run by Todd Anderson with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter.

Apana’s 35-yard touchdown run with 11:44 left in the game gave the Trojans a 21-0 lead.

University quarterback Chris Peake scored on an eight-yard run with 3:33 left and Apana scored again on a five-yard run with 2:09 remaining.
