LETTERS ON LETTERS

We all should be so determined and strong to succeed in gaining such a respectful position as a USC songleader, and to withstand derogatory remarks from judgmental and uninformed individuals (Letters, Oct. 27). I can speak firsthand; I held that position from 1981 through 1985 and had a rewarding opportunity few will experience.

It hurts to hear it suggested that we, as songleaders and cheerleaders, have a frivolous purpose within a university system and a less-than-dedicated academic role.

With a full class schedule along with the 30-hours-per-week commitment to songleading, I graduated with a 3.5 grade-point average from the USC Business School and have gone on to an executive position with a prominent corporation. My teammates have gone on to become mothers, teachers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, social workers and executives within the business and entertainment fields--ultimately, all integral to our society.

We, as a society, must re-examine our ways of thinking and belief systems, for it is sad that so pure and good a purpose could ultimately be compartmentalized and subjected to ridicule.
