BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CSUN Women Fall to 0-12 but Still Find a Ray of Hope

The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team has learned many lessons this season. And during Wednesday night’s nonconference game at UC Santa Barbara, school was back in session.

The Matadors played their best 20 minutes this season, but that was not enough to overcome Santa Barbara, 96-88.

The curriculum: It takes two halves to make a whole, but only one bad half to dig a hole.

“We played a good second half, the best half we’ve put together all year,” said Kim Chandler, Northridge’s interim coach. “The first half, our intensity wasn’t what it needed to be defensively.”

The Matadors (0-12) scored 41 points in the second half, but that was not enough to overcome a 25-point halftime deficit. The deficit was largely attributable to a 7-minute 30-second stretch in which the Matadors failed to score.

Northridge, which has lost a school-record 16 consecutive games dating to last season, made 34 turnovers to 17 for Santa Barbara, offsetting a solid shooting performance by the Matadors who made 27 of 51 shots from the field (52.9%).

Shagarro Lattin scored a career-high 21 points for Northridge and added a team-high nine rebounds. Christine Rumfola added 14 points and Dawn Broline had 12 for Northridge.

BOYS

Alemany 70, Bishop Amat 63--Alemany outscored host Bishop Amat, 25-7, in the fourth quarter to pull out a nonleague win.

Seniors Mike Smith (24 points) and Richard Dice (18) led the charge in the fourth quarter. Smith scored 11 in the quarter and Dice added eight for Alemany (5-4), which switched to a full-court trap entering the fourth quarter.

Royal 78, St. Genevieve 65--Royal made 27 of 29 free throws, including 15 of 15 in the fourth quarter, to post a come-from-behind victory in the second-round consolation bracket of the Bosco Tech tournament. Royal’s Brett Osterhoudt scored nine of his team-high 30 points in the fourth quarter as the Highlanders (3-6) overcame a four-point deficit. Edwin Morales scored a game-high 33 points--including seven three-point baskets in 10 attempts--for St. Genevieve (1-4).

Kennedy 72, Narbonne 62--Behind junior Joe Wyatt’s game-high 27 points, Kennedy coasted in the first round of the Hamilton tournament. Shauhin Talesh added 16 points for Kennedy (6-3).

Saddleback 78, Thousand Oaks 74--Chris Bradshaw scored 20 points to lead Saddleback in a first-round game of the Fullerton tournament. Andrew Borg scored 20 for Thousand Oaks.

Marshall 65, Sherman Oaks CES 56--Khalif Muhammad scored 17 points for Sherman Oaks (4-2) in a first-round loss in the L.A. Invitational tournament at Van Nuys. John Cannon added 15 points and Kyle Augustus had 12, all on three-point baskets, for Sherman Oaks.

Cleveland 62, Van Nuys 60--Junior center Shawn Bankhead had game-high totals of 24 points and nine rebounds to lead Cleveland (2-5) in the first round of the L. A. Invitational tournament at Van Nuys.

Eric Grayson had 21 points for Van Nuys.

Newbury Park 82, Fillmore 47--Jason Patterson scored 17 points for the Panthers (5-4) in a nonleague victory over Fillmore (4-5) at Newbury Park.

Chaminade 53, Ayala 52--Junior Trevor Testwuide sank two free throws with six seconds to play to lift Chaminade (3-4) to a second-round consolation victory in the Damien tournament. Testwuide scored a team-high 13 points and Ted Corcoran added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Calabasas 57, Oak Park 43--Anthony Hampton scored a game-high 17 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead Calabasas (3-5) in a nonleague game at home.

GIRLS

Chaminade 61, Van Nuys 54--Maria Costa and Georgia Roy each scored 14 points to help the Eagles (10-2) beat Van Nuys in a first-round game of the Burroughs/Bell-Jeff tournament.

Bell-Jeff 72, Granada Hills 64--Lori Talley scored a team-high 26 points to lead Bell-Jeff (6-1) in a first-round game of the Burroughs/Bell-Jeff tournament. Karen Berkowitz had 31 points for Granada Hills (4-1).

Notre Dame 43, Louisville 37--Shannon McGlothlin scored eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Knights (5-4) beat Louisville (4-5) in a nonleague game at Notre Dame.

Moorpark 42, Agoura 41--Colleen Tucker (10 points) made a three-point basket with three seconds to play to lead Moorpark (4-4) in a nonleague game.
