Capistrano Valley combined the strong inside play of Jeremy Garrett and Steve Ransom with its fine outside shooting to defeat Edison, 68-55, Wednesday night in a nonleague game at Edison High School.
Garrett scored 17 points and Ransom added nine points and nine rebounds as the Cougars (13-3) pulled away from a 39-37 halftime lead to a 58-49 margin at the end of the third quarter. Edison (7-5) was held to 18 points in the second half, 10 of them from Brandon Jessie.
“We played well tonight,” Cougar Coach Mark Thornton said. “I’d like to talk about all of the positive and good things we did.”
Among the positive things was the play of Garrett, a 6-foot-8 center, who scored underneath and while running the wing on the fast break.
“We knew they weren’t going to get back, and we could go over the top to Garrett,” Thornton said. “We have four kids, Garrett, Ransom, (Eric) Seiffert and (Matt) Moore, who play well inside.”
Garrett scored a team-high 17 points, as did guard Tom Airey, who hit five three-pointers. Cougar guard Dave Sedgewick had 12 assists. Jessie led the Chargers with 21 points and seven rebounds.
