COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Boise State Overtakes Titans in Conference Wrestling Opener
Cal State Fullerton won four of the first seven matches in Wednesday’s Pacific 10 Conference wrestling opener at Titan Gym, but Boise State swept the final three for a 19-12 victory.
Michael Grubbs (118), Lyndon Campbell (134), Jason Roberts (142) and Laszlo Molnar (167) recorded victories for the Titans (2-3-1, 0-1). Paul Jackson began the Broncos’ rally with a 12-4 major decision over Dwayne Buth at 177, giving Boise State a 13-12 lead. Fred Givens increased the Broncos advantage to 16-12 with a 7-2 decision over Eric Givens at 190.
Todd Gilkey assured Boise State of the victory with a 5-4 decision over heavyweight John Sanchez.
In nonconference men’s swimming and diving:
UC Irvine 154, Alaska Anchorage 83--Greg Dovidio, Pat Keenan and John Dorsey each won two events for the Anteaters (3-1) at Crawford Hall pool.
Dovidio, a junior from Servite, won the one- and three-meter diving events. His 294.30 three-meter score qualified him for the NCAA Regional Diving Championship March 13-14 at Brigham Young.
