COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Falters in 2nd Half and UC San Diego Posts 83-71 Win
Cal Lutheran watched as a nine-point halftime lead disappeared in the first two minutes of the second half and UC San Diego rallied to win, 83-71, Wednesday night in a nonconference basketball game at Cal Lutheran.
San Diego’s John Spence made two field goals, Rick Batt made one, and Erik Johnson made a three-point shot to tie the score, 27-27, with 18 minutes remaining.
San Diego broke loose on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good with 9 minutes to play.
San Diego contained guard Jeff deLaveaga, Cal Lutheran’s top scorer who was averaging 31.2 points a game, limiting him to 21 points. DeLaveaga made six of 20 field-goal attempts, including three of 14 three-point shots, and made six of eight free throws.
San Diego (9-4) shot much better than Cal Lutheran (3-8) in the second half, making 80.6% of its field goal attempts. Cal Lutheran shot 38.9%.
“Our offensive woes bled into our defense,” Cal Lutheran Coach Mike Dunlap said.
Simon O’Donnell contributed 17 points and 16 rebounds for Cal Lutheran. Rick Batt led UC San Diego with 22 points.
