NATION IN BRIEF : MARYLAND : New Refrigerant Is Produced, EPA Says

A University of Maryland research team has developed a substitute refrigerant and refrigerator modifications that could produce almost enough savings in energy costs to pay for phasing out chlorofluorocarbons now damaging Earth’s ozone layer, the Environmental Protection Agency said. The refrigerator modification would cool the freezer and fresh-food compartments separately and, as a result, more efficiently. Instead of using Freon, the new design would employ a mixture of undisclosed CFC substitutes.
