48 Children Killed by Faulty Garage Openers

WASHINGTON — Forty-eight children have been killed since 1982 in accidents involving garage doors activated by faulty openers, according to records kept by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Although improvements in the openers have decreased the likelihood of such accidents, the commission has announced a public-education program to help owners of these products make sure they are maintained and used properly.
An industry group, the Industry Coalition for Automatic Garage Door Opener Safety, will send consumers a sticker to be placed next to the door-control button and a brochure describing how to test a garage-door opener and teach children about safety. To obtain the information, call 1-800-727-2338.
