First-year Coach Martz has a lot of concerns. Before worrying about things such as playing in a league with Foothill, a Southern Section Division 4-A finalist last season, Santa Ana Valley has more basic problems. “We were worried that we were even going to play . . . period,” Martz said. Currently, the Santa Ana Valley roster consists of only 10 players: one senior, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. Only two players return from last season’s squad, but perhaps that isn’t bad considering the Falcons won only one league game last season. “I don’t think last year will matter much to this team,” Martz said. “Pretty much everyone is new.” Guerrero is the lone returning starter, and she will alternate at pitcher and shortstop with Gonzalez. “Our pitching can be decent,” Martz said. “(Gonzalez) pitched JV last year, and she throws strikes with decent velocity. My philosophy is if you don’t walk people, you will be okay. We will make other teams put the ball in play.” According to Martz, Alvarez appears to be the team’s best power hitter and will play first base. Martz also likes the team’s overall speed. “Marisol, Yessenia, and Susie have good speed and we can steal some runs . . . if we get on base,” Martz said. And that might be biggest ‘if’ for the Falcons this season.
