Duarte : Economic Panel Changes

After a public hearing Tuesday, the City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance expanding the duties of the city’s Economic Development Commission and giving the organization a more direct role in shaping the local business community.
Under the amendment to the city code, commission members will work directly with city staff to develop and implement a comprehensive economic development/renewal program to attract businesses to the city while retaining and expanding existing ones.
Commission Chairman Jim Goodwin said the change will give his organization more direct influence on commence in the city. The commission will be able to hire outside consultants to assist local businesses, he said.
The amendment will also increase the commission’s membership from 5 to 7.
