Fifteen Ventura County peace officers and private citizens are scheduled to receive heroism awards on April 4 at the 19th annual Medal of Valor Awards Dinner.
James Grunert, a deputy district attorney and president of the Ventura County Peace Officers Assn., said the citizens will receive medals of merit. Peace officers will be awarded either a medal of merit or a medal of valor, Grunert said.
Some of the awards will be for acts of heroism during the February floods, he said.
To qualify for the awards, Grunert said, “there has to be acts of heroism where the individuals saved lives and, in the case of the medal of valor, where their own lives were at risk.”
The dinner is scheduled at the Doubletree Hotel, 2055 E. Harbor Blvd. in Ventura. Cocktails will be served from 6 to 7 p.m.; dinner will follow. Tickets, which may be purchased at police stations or at the door, are $15.
“It’s something that every citizen should go to, because you’re really honoring those who have risked their lives to help the citizens of this county,” Grunert said.
