The University of San Diego’s baseball team rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning to upset 14th-ranked Arizona State, 4-3, in front of 325 at USD’s Cunningham Field Tuesday afternoon.
With two out in the ninth and the game tied, 3-3, freshman Eric Morton, a San Marcos High graduate, bounced a single off the glove of Sun Devil third baseman Antone Williamson, to score senior Ed Scofield. USD has now won four in a row.
ASU’s Jim Henderson broke a 2-2 tie at the top of the ninth with a two-out home run, his first of the season, to deep center field. Scofield lined a single to right to score Dave Pingree to make it 3-3, then got in scoring position when he stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch--the fourth of the game. Morton hit his game-winning RBI, just wide of third base, on a two-two count.
Freshman Pat James (2-0), making his first collegiate start, struck out 10 and allowed eight hits and went the distance for USD (13-11). ASU is 15-8.
