LUXURY WATERS: Small-boat owners are freeing up harbor slips during the recession (E3) by docking on dry land; that’s where most boats have always been. About 8,500 commercial and private slips exist in the county, where the Southern California Marine Assn. reports about 120,000 boats. . . . “They range from the 14-footer to about 170 feet,” says the group’s director, Spike Harvey. “Over 35 feet you’re talking about a $100,000 boat, and it goes up into the millions from there.” He estimates there are a thousand boats in the “luxury yacht” range.
