Linebacker Pat Swilling became the NFL’s best-paid defensive player, but criticized the system for failing to help his colleagues.
In the 14 years that restricted free agency has been in effect, Swilling is only the fifth player to get an offer sheet from another team. Detroit offered Swilling, the NFL defensive player of the year last season, $5.475 million for three years, a no-trade agreement and a signing bonus of $1.775 million. New Orleans matched the offer.
