In the days of double-knit, before Ralph Lauren and before the Gap, if you wanted clothing made from natural fibers you had to send away to the Vermont Country Store.
But cotton clothing isn’t the only thing the old-fashioned family-run business is known for. Since 1946 it’s been a fine source of old-time quality foods. The incredible array includes Vermont common crackers, ginger buttons, cream filberts, horehound drops, Walnettos and peppermint puffs. But our favorites are the maple cream drops. A version of the classic vanilla cream drop, each 1 1/4-inch dark-chocolate peak is filled with a smooth, rich cream made from pure maple syrup. Prices have gone up since ‘46, but the drops are still a good value--a 1-pound box is $13.75, plus $5.39 postage.
