NATIONAL LEAGUE : Swift Is Simply Too Much for Padres in Giants’ Victory
Bill Swift pitched his second consecutive complete game and doubled twice Thursday as the Giants ended the San Diego Padres’ five-game winning streak, 6-1, at San Francisco.
Swift (3-0), who returns to Seattle between starts to be with his pregnant wife, lowered his earned-run average to 0.70. He allowed eight hits, struck out three and walked none.
Swift, obtained from the Seattle Mariners in the trade for Kevin Mitchell, shut out the Atlanta Braves on six hits Saturday night.
San Diego’s Dave Eiland (0-1) gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
With the score tied, 1-1, in the fifth inning, Swift hit a run-scoring double with two out and Darren Lewis followed with an RBI single.
It became 4-1 when Cory Snyder’s single scored Will Clark, who tripled in the sixth inning for the 999th hit of his career.
Willie McGee hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to score Swift after his second double, and Royce Clayton hit an RBI single in the eighth.
Kurt Stillwell’s RBI single put San Diego ahead in the second inning, but the Giants tied the score in the fourth on Matt Williams’ double-play grounder.
