Quake Damage May Reach $1 Million

Authorities said Wednesday night’s earthquake caused $500,000 to $1 million in damage in the Morongo Basin, which includes the high desert communities of Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. Two buildings were condemned and dozens of others sustained minor damage. Several people suffered minor injuries.

Hundreds of aftershocks rumbled through the Southern California desert. One large aftershock early Friday had a preliminary magnitude of 4.1. It was reported at 5:36 a.m. and was centered about nine miles east of Desert Hot Springs--just one mile from the center of Wednesday’s 6.1-magnitude temblor, said Julie Hakewill, a Caltech spokeswoman.
