PREP ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Clinches Sunset Baseball Title
Huntington Beach scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Fountain Valley, 2-1, and clinch the Sunset League baseball championship Saturday at Fountain Valley High School.
Mike Moutrey’s single scored Ed Burrell from second base with the winning run for the Oilers (21-3, 10-1 in league), the third-ranked team in the county. Huntington Beach set a school record for victories in a season.
Jon Ward pitched the final seven innings without allowing a run to improve to 9-0. Howie Clark had two hits for the Oilers, and finished hitting .631 in league play.
Fountain Valley is 6-4 in league.
In another Sunset League game:
Ocean View 6, Westminster 0--Mathieu Royer pitched a three-hitter while striking out eight for visiting Ocean View (14-8, 5-5). Rich Crowe had two hits, two stolen bases and two runs batted in for the Seahawks.
In Angelus League baseball:
Mater Dei 14, Santa Margarita 0--Mike McDonald and Steve Locascio combined on a two-hitter for host Mater Dei (19-3, 10-2). The Monarchs, the top-ranked team in the county, broke open the game with a seven-run third inning. Cale Carter and Don Matthewson each had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
In Olympic League softball:
Brethren Christian 2, Ayala 1--The host Warriors (9-5, 5-4) scored two runs in the fifth without a hit as Tammy Judd and Julie Rosa both scored on Ayala errors.
In nonleague boys’ volleyball:
Huntington Beach 3, San Marcos 2--Jeff Vanderwal had 19 kills and Troy Wooton 16 as the visiting Oilers (17-2), the fourth-ranked team in the county, won 15-5, 15-7, 15-17, 12-15, 15-11.
