A record number of residents showed up at the Ventura County Fairgrounds to dump their hazardous wastes Saturday, officials said.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day topped its record of 965 households in 1989 by drawing 1,013 households, said Kitty Dill, spokeswoman for the Ventura Regional Sanitation District, which sponsored the event.
Residents disposed of household products such as used motor oil, car batteries, drain cleaners and pool chemicals at no charge, Dill said. About 65% of the materials collected are recyclable, officials said.
More than 50 cars were already in line at 9:30 a.m., so organizers opened half an hour early, Dill said. The event ran until 2 p.m., Dill said.
Ventura was the city with the highest number of households--643--participating, followed by Oxnard with 139, Dill said.
