Japan’s Wages Rise 4.97%: An economic slump kept pay increases won by Japan’s largest trade union at an average 4.97%, the lowest increase in four years, the 8-million-member Japanese Trade Union Confederation said. In annual wage negotiations this spring, members received a wage increase averaging $101 a month, the confederation said. It was the smallest raise since a 4.5% increase in 1988.
