The Goebel Senior Center in Thousand Oaks today will sponsor its annual Fourth of July batting contest and softball game, open to participants age 50 and older.

Participants may register for the Senior Home Run Derby batting contest between 8:30 and 9 a.m. at the Conejo Community Center baseball diamond, Dover and Hendrix avenues.

The contest will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. There is a $2 fee to enter. Each derby contestant will have 10 chances to hit a softball for distance.

First- and second-place trophies will be awarded in these age divisions: 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 and older.

“This popular event has been going on for at least nine years,” said Mark Schrock, the center’s recreation supervisor. “We have some people in their 80s who hit in the derby. And we expect about 30 to enter this year.”

At 10 a.m., after the Senior Home Run Derby, players age 50 and older may participate in a free softball game against a team composed of Conejo Recreation and Park District staff members.

“We will probably play two five-inning games to accommodate all those who want to play,” Schrock said. “Last year, the seniors won.”
