Countywide : Caltrans Switches to Less-Polluting Cars

The state Department of Transportation staff in Orange County has replaced half of its fleet of older, gas-powered cars with newer vehicles that run on less-polluting methanol.
The new vehicles are part of the agency’s effort to comply with the state’s clean air plans, officials said.
Altogether, 51 of the cars in the Caltrans district fleet of 98 have been replaced with 1992 Chevrolet Lumina variable-fuel vehicles that allow drivers to switch between methanol and unleaded gasoline, or a combination of the two.
The old cars will be auctioned by the state later this year in Los Angeles.
