The players’ union filed an unfair labor practice charge against Commissioner Fay Vincent, accusing him of pressuring New York Yankees officials to change their testimony in the Steve Howe grievance. In a two-count charge filed with the National Labor Relations Board, the players’ union said the commissioner illegally threatened Yankees Manager Buck Showalter, General Manager Gene Michael and vice president Jack Lawn with discipline for not supporting baseball’s drug policy, then backed off after the players’ association objected.
