In response to the recent protests by, and your article about, the striking drywallers (Aug. 1), I am compelled to write.
The construction industry used to provide a means for an American to make a decent living. Our seemingly unrestricted immigration--legal or otherwise--has changed all that.
When a person takes the unrealistically low bid for his/her construction project, he/she is hiring an uninsured, cheap, and probably illegal crew, while at the same time taking the job away from a qualified American.
The icing on the cake is that now these same people who took work away from us by working for half the price now want the same money we made before they took our jobs away! If this isn’t reason enough for INS sweeps at construction sites, I don’t know what is.
