Fullerton : City Seeking Groups to ‘Adopt’ Parks
The Fullerton Community Services Department is accepting applications from community groups interested in adopting a city park. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 8.
Adoption will be for a 15-week period, beginning on Sept. 20, during which time the groups will be responsible for keeping their park clean. Each group successfully completing its assignment will receive $325 from the city.
John Clements, “Adopt-A-Park” coordinator, said the groups selected will be expected to clean up their park at least once a week during the session.
The groups are to pick up litter, including paper, cans and unbroken glass. Maintenance will be handled by city crews. The groups are also expected to report any dangerous objects, broken equipment or suspicious circumstances they notice while cleaning their parks.
Clements said that to qualify, applicants must be Fullerton-based nonprofit organizations with more than 50% of their members living in the city. They must also provide a list of local community activities which they have sponsored or in which they have participated.
Applicants must have enough members to complete the weekly cleanup, Clements said. Assignments will be determined by drawing lots.
Parks and playgrounds eligible for adoption are Acacia, Adlena, Amerige, Beechwood, Brea Dam, Byerrum, Chapman, Fern, Ford, Gilman, Grissom, Independence, Hermosa, Hillcrest, Ladera Vista, Laguna Lake, Laguna Road, Lemon, Nature, Nicolas, Orangethorpe, Pacific Drive, Richman, Rolling Hills, Valencia and Woodcrest.
Applications are available at the Community Services Department in the basement of the Fullerton City Hall, 303 W. Commonwealth Ave. For further information, contact the department at (714) 738-6575.
