Two men who were freed from prison last March after serving nearly 18 years on murder convictions that were ruled improper have each filed a $50-million legal claim against the city of Los Angeles.
In suits filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court, Clarence Chance, 42, and Benjamin Powell, 45, allege that they were victims of intentional police misconduct, false imprisonment and were slandered by former Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates.
Chance and Powell were released from prison March 25 after serving time for the 1973 slaying of Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy David Andrews at a gas station in South-Central Los Angeles.
