PLATFORM : Be Prepared

The reality of past major disasters tells us local emergency medical services can and will be overwhelmed. The Scouting motto “Be Prepared” is the best advice.
For some time now, emergency planning experts have advised us to be prepared to be self-sufficient for three to five days following a major earthquake or other local disaster. Self-preparedness can start by simply opening your telephone directory to the first few pages for guidance in preparing first-aid kits and emergency supplies for your home and car. At least one member of each family and business should enroll in a basic first-aid class.
It has been demonstrated repeatedly that medical institutions can be quickly overwhelmed by the demands of the community following a disaster. Government assistance will arrive, but it takes time to mobilize and respond. It is imperative that all of us make time to be prepared to care for our families and our co-workers until help arrives.
