The selection of an acting or interim baseball commissioner is expected this morning, when the major league executive council meets in St. Louis.
Jerry Reinsdorf, co-owner of the Chicago White Sox and a leader of the faction that successfully pressed for the resignation of Fay Vincent, said Tuesday that he expected the appointment of a chairman or an acting commissioner, who would serve only until an interim commissioner was named. The interim commissioner would then preside while owners decide on how the office will be restructured.
Sources said it is possible that either American League President Bobby Brown or National League President Bill White would serve as the acting commissioner for a few days, or until the interim commissioner is selected.
Former American League president Lee MacPhail, 75, is considered the leading candidate for the interim position.
Three general managers--Fred Claire of the Dodgers, John Scheurholz of the Atlanta Braves and Sandy Alderson of the Oakland Athletics--were among the new names being mentioned in owners’ circles as possible choices.
In another matter, the executive council may soon, possibly even today or Thursday, reinstate George Steinbrenner as managing partner of the New York Yankees.
