PELICAN BRIEF: American white pelicans used to be rare here, maybe one or two sightings a year. But five years ago, flocks of the large bird suddenly and inexplicably began wintering here, especially along the Santa Ana River in Anaheim (OC Live!). Birder Doug Willick recently counted more than 100. . . . Bird lovers are thrilled, fishermen aren’t: one of the bird’s favorite haunts is the stocked ponds of Santa Ana River Lakes.
