Josiah Henson, a 1952 Olympic medal winner who is running against George Steinbrenner for executive vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee, reportedly called Steinbrenner “a walking disaster.”
The New York Times reported that Henson had decided to run for vice president--there are four candidates for three positions--rather than for president of the USOC.
“I’ve said it before and I still don’t think a convicted felon who’s been barred from his sport should represent the Olympics in this country,” said Henson, a bronze medalist in freestyle wrestling at the Helsinki Games.
Steinbrenner was convicted of 15 felony counts of making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon’s 1972 presidential campaign, earning a one-year suspension from baseball by order of Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. Steinbrenner was pardoned by President Reagan in 1989.
