Pros and Cons of Prop. K

In times of trouble, it is important for all of us to work together on solutions to our economic problems. One measure that will “help end a fiscal mess” (in the words of your editorial) in Los Angeles is Proposition K. This common-sense measure to change an antiquated City Charter provision was placed on the ballot by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter with the unanimous support of the City Council, the Airport Commission and mayor to allow excess profits from LAX to be spent on essential city services, in particular police, fire and paramedic support.

Unfortunately, a single special interest group, the Air Transport Assn., is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to convince voters that Proposition K is not what it appears to be--a long overdue change in how the city handles its fiscal affairs in regards to the airport. To simplify what this is really all about: If you believe the city’s cash-rich airport should be allowed to share its excess profits with a cash-poor city, vote “yes” on Proposition K.
