The Fax on a Lack of Return Mail
As an avid former letter writer, I had to write a letter to The Times after reading “Postscript to the Personal Letter” (Nov. 1), (in which) Berkley Hudson wrote about the lost art of letter writing.
My correspondence has come to a virtual standstill. Friends and relatives don’t write much anymore. Their excuses are lack of time, negligence--and they confess to being lazy. They say a phone call is easier.
Writing a letter is relaxing for me, primarily because no one is going to interrupt me to talk. I have more time to think about what I want to say. Supposedly, people would answer me in their leisure time. I hoped that they would comment on my letter’s contents.
Not so.
I have a “wardrobe” of stationery and paper piled up in my home office closet. To become more up to date, my husband and I will buy a word processor soon, and I’ll be able to write letters on it.
But that doesn’t guarantee an answer.
