Colombia Intellectuals Assail Marxist Rebels
BOGOTA, Colombia — Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez and other leading Colombian intellectuals on Sunday condemned the country’s Marxist insurgents in a letter published in Bogota’s El Tiempo newspaper.
“Your actions have created a climate of political and ideological confusion that have turned Colombia into a battleground where taking up arms is the most common form of freedom of expression,” read the text of the letter addressed to the Simon Bolivar Coordinated Guerrilla Front.
About 50 scholars, journalists and artists signed the appeal to the rebels.
At least 100 rebels and soldiers have been killed in fighting in recent weeks.
