FDA Examining Extended-Wear Contact Lenses: The Food and Drug Administration said it is reviewing the safety of the extended-wear contact lenses worn by about 2 million Americans, based on earlier studies that wearers of disposable lenses are at risk of a serious eye infection. The agency said it is inspecting the facilities of all three manufacturers of disposable lenses to make sure there are no manufacturing problems that might result in defects. The companies are Johnson & Johnson, Ciba-Geigy’s Ciba-Vision and Bausch & Lomb Inc.
