The Metrolink commuter train service is offering free rides and an expanded afternoon schedule to spur holiday season use of the 2-month-old mass transit system, which connects four communities with Union Station downtown, officials said Friday.
Three afternoon commuter trains will operate out of the station on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve to serve commuters who work half-day schedules on the holidays, Metrolink officials announced.
The train to Santa Clarita will leave Union Station at 1:20 and arrive at 2:17 p.m.; the train to Moorpark will leave downtown at 1 and arrive at 2:13 p.m.; the train to Claremont will leave downtown at 1:20 and arrive at 1:58 p.m.
Evening commuter trains will operate on their regular schedules, Metrolink spokesman Peter Hidalgo said.
Metrolink officials are offering the free rides next Monday through Thursday to commuters who fill out a coupon provided at Metrolink stations.
The coupons also have been inserted in several newspapers.
