LOS ANGELES : Rehiring of Retired Police for 1 Year to Be on Ballot

The City Council directed the city attorney Friday to prepare a charter amendment for the April 20 ballot that would allow the temporary rehiring of retired police officers.
Aimed at giving the Police Department more flexibility in filling openings, the measure would allow retired officers to be recalled, without a loss of pension, for up to a year. The law allows the rehiring of retirees for a maximum of 90 days.
“The idea is to put your hands on a well-trained, experienced police officer right away,” said Councilman Nate Holden, who sponsored the measure.
