Heusser, who has coached boys’ and girls’ basketball for nearly two decades, doesn’t need diagrams to see a team’s limitations. So when he says the Cavaliers probably can’t stay with Rancho Alamitos but could be in the thick of the league race otherwise, it’s time to listen. “We’re going to be real competitive,” Heusser said. “We have good experience and depth. We’re not tall, but we are very physical.” One of the reasons Heusser thinks the Cavaliers could fight it out for second or third place is the core of players making the jump from the school’s highly successful junior varsity squad. “We had a strong JV (last season),” Heusser said. “We only lost two games, both to Rancho in close games. We were solid.” Torres, Remmel and Morris have been promoted from that team and should contribute noticeably. But the key players remain Santiago’s three returning starters: Robledo, Olmedo and Matemate. Robledo, the point guard, averaged 16.3 points last season; Olmedo averaged 7.6 and Matemate 8.4. Cornett, who didn’t play last season but was in the program the two previous years, backs up Olmedo at the post.
