An assistant for the Cypress College women the previous three seasons, Wolfe takes over a Fighting Irish team that could give defending champion Rancho Alamitos a push for the league title. Kennedy is off to a good start, with a third-place finish in the Fullerton tournament this month. “We are quick, and we have speed,” Wolfe said. “We’ll try to fast break, and we’ll play pressure defense.” The team’s catalyst again will be Matsumoto, a three-time all-league player who led the Irish in practically every offensive category last season. Matsumoto, a Times’ All-County second-team selection last season, averaged 18.8 points. She also had 101 assists and 105 steals and was second on the squad in rebounding with 157. “I see her improving her game even more this year,” said Wolfe, whose goals include building the Irish into a basketball power. The team also features three other returning starters, none of them seniors, who can get Wolfe started in that direction. Kitagawa was second on the team in scoring in 1991-92 with 184 points, Williams was third in rebounds with 142, and Gutjahr had 99. Swan, up from the junior varsity, gives Kennedy some height up front.
