In the mixed-up world of the L.A. Invitational, Los Angeles defeated impromptu opponent Mountain View, 58-50, Friday in the championship semifinals of the tournament.
Originally scheduled to be the first of two semifinal games at East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Coach Craig Murray was notified at 11 a.m. by tournament organizer Jerry Weiner that the game had been moved to 3 p.m. at Wilson.
Mountain View, which lost in the first round to Washington, was a last-minute replacement for Carson, which played Santa Monica.
Terryl Woolery, the leading scorer for Los Angeles, banged his hip just after the opening tip-off, stepping on a towel left on the sidelines. Woolery, who had been averaging 24 points a game in the tournament, finished with only seven. Brandon Thomas picked up the offensive slack, scoring 13 points to lead the Los Angeles attack.
In the tournament’s consolation game, Wilson beat Sherman Oaks, 63-48. Octavio Brito had 37 points and Paul Hunt added 22 points for Wilson. It was the second win of the day for Wilson, which beat Washington Junior Varsity, 64-62, in overtime in the first round of the Officials Tournament.
Records: Los Angeles 5-1.
