NHL ROUNDUP : Islanders Win in Pittsburgh, 4-3
The Pittsburgh Penguins go for broke on the power play, and occasionally they get busted.
Patrick Flatley scored two short-handed goals during the second period and the New York Islanders scored their fourth consecutive victory, 4-3, at Pittsburgh on Saturday night, the Penguins’ second home loss in only 17 games.
“It was the same thing both times,” Flatley said. “They shot the puck wide and it wrapped around the boards.
“They were sniffing around our net pretty good. They had four guys up and only one guy back, so we had some room. Benny Hogue made a couple of great passes and we had plenty of time on both of them.”
Flatley broke a 1-1 tie on a two-on-one break at 4:23 of the second period and scored on a similar situation at 19:19.
The Penguins have given up 11 short-handed goals this season, tied with San Jose for most in the league. They have given up five short-handed goals in their last eight games. It’s a byproduct of their explosive power play, which leads the NHL with 52 goals.
