Clearing out the notebook from the Division II championship football game . . . .

There were more than a few remarkable moments in the second game of the season between Esperanza and Los Alamitos. Among them:

--Tim Carey’s 50-yard scoring strike to Don Ruberio in the third quarter that gave Los Alamitos a 14-7 lead. With the wind howling at his back, Carey showed the strength and touch that will surely make him a standout at Stanford.

--The fourth-quarter sack of Carey by Esperanza defensive tackle Brad Kircher. With Los Alamitos looking at third and four at the Esperanza 49-yard line and about 2 minutes left, Kircher broke through the line and tackled Carey for an eight-yard loss that effectively ended the Griffins’ hopes for a victory.

--The odd silence from the 9,000 fans at game’s end. A moment earlier they were standing and screaming for their respective teams, but almost all seemed later to be wondering how they should feel.

--Opposing linemen Travis Kirschke of Esperanza and Robert Torres of Los Alamitos standing with their arms around each other while family and friends took snapshots long after the game was over.

One look at that scene and everything seemed right in the world. Even a 14-14 tie that settled absolutely nothing seemed was OK.

Add big game: It would have been absolute bedlam at Cerritos College if the game had gone to a California tiebreaker. Here’s one vote for a return to overtime for championship games.

Do you think the Southern Section will come to its senses and make the change?

Neither do we.
