City to Seek Funding for Beach Project

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The City Council voted this week to apply for a $500,000 federal grant that will help officials begin the renovation of a one-mile section of the city beach from the Vincent Moorhouse lifeguard headquarters to Beach Boulevard.
Facilities at the so-called South Beach, which attracts about 6.2 million visitors annually, have not been upgraded since 1962, said Community Services Director Ron Hagan.
Approved in July, the South Beach master plan includes rebuilding restrooms, renovation and new lighting at the parking lot, separating the beach service road from wheeled traffic and pedestrians, and creating a three-foot-high sand wall to prevent sand from being blown onto the surface road and into landscaping.
