COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 3 Kentucky Beats No. 4 Indiana, 81-78
Bob Knight usually gets what he wants, but the Indiana coach is going to have to wait at least one more game for victory No. 600.
Third-ranked Kentucky made sure of that Sunday by making 16 three-point shots en route to an 81-78 nonconference victory over No. 4 Indiana before a Freedom Hall-record crowd of 20,060 at Louisville, Ky.
Kentucky (9-0) made 16 of 41 three-point attempts.
“We want to shoot anywhere from 20 to 30 three-points a game--41 is a lot,” Kentucky Coach Rick Pitino said. “That was the major difference in the game.”
So was Indiana’s free-throw shooting. The Hoosiers (11-2) made only 18 of 36 foul shots.
The loss kept Knight from becoming the 14th Division I coach, and the fourth active coach, to reach the 600-victory mark.
Knight was asked if his team, which entered the game making 70% of its free throws, had been making them in practice.
“They don’t go on the scoreboard in practice,” he said.
Jamal Mashburn and Travis Ford each scored 29 points for Kentucky.
“It is tough to defend the three-point shot and when they double-team us underneath it makes it harder,” Mashburn said. “As you can tell, we aren’t shy about taking the three either.”
Calbert Cheaney and Matt Nover each scored 29 points for Indiana, which trailed by as many as 11 points late in the first half before fighting back to take a 67-65 lead with 5:28 to play on a three-point basket by Cheaney. Kentucky regained the lead at 74-72 with 2:45 to play on Ford’s seventh three-point basket.
Nover tied the score for the final time 21 seconds later, and the Wildcats had the lead for good after Mashburn’s three-point basket with 2:02 to play.
Indiana got within one point twice, but Damon Bailey’s three-point attempt with four seconds left bounced off the rim.
Kentucky was behind, 15-10, with 13:44 to play in the first half before the Wildcats made six consecutive three-point baskets. Ford made one, Junior Braddy made two, Ford added two more and Mashburn made one. Mashburn then made a two-point jump shot from the side before making another three-point shot. That made Kentucky nine of 14 from three-point range.
No. 19 California 84, Texas Southern 69--The Bears made 63% of their shots during the second half at Berkeley to end a two-game losing streak.
Alfred Grigsby scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds, and five other players scored more than 10 points for Cal (6-2), which lost to James Madison and Cornell at a tournament last week.
Kevin Granger scored 20 points for Texas Southern (2-7).
Each team committed 23 turnovers, including eight each by Granger and Cal freshman Jason Kidd.
