PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Oregon State Beats Washington, Ties for Lead, 73-70
Scott Haskin and Mustapha Hoff each scored 17 points as Oregon State moved into a tie for the Pacific 10 Conference lead Thursday night with a 73-70 victory over Washington at Seattle.
The Beavers (9-5 overall and 5-0 and tied with No. 11 Arizona for the Pac-10 lead), took control in the final 7 1/2 minutes after the score was tied, 56-56.
Hoff’s free throw put Oregon State ahead for good, 57-56, with 7:36 remaining, but he missed his second attempt. Haskin grabbed the rebound and put it in for a 59-56 lead.
Chad Scott made a layup with 5:51 left, Haskin added a basket and Brent Barry’s jumper with 3:51 left gave the Beavers a 65-56 lead.
The Huskies (7-6, 1-3) got back into the game on two three-pointers by Jason Tyrus in the final minute and had a chance to tie, but Prentiss Perkins missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Rich Manning had 27 points and nine rebounds in the battle of 6-11 centers against Haskin, who had seven rebounds.
Washington State 95, Oregon 79--Bennie Seltzer scored 31 points and the Cougars ended a three-game losing streak by routing the Ducks at Pullman, Wash.
Seltzer made three consecutive three-pointers as Washington State (7-6, 1-3) jumped ahead, 17-3, on its way to a 47-34 halftime lead.
Antoine Stoudamire kept Oregon (7-10, 0-5) in the game by scoring 12 of his 19 points in the first half, but the Ducks never made a serious run. Aaron Johnson and Orlando Williams scored 15 points for Oregon.
Eddie Hill added 20 points for the Cougars.
