Private Versus Public Schools
I read the article informing us of Gov. Pete Wilson’s latest strategy to break up the public schools and make all schools private. He calls the new “public” school charter schools (“Wilson Calls for Schools to Set Own Rules,” Jan. 29).
He holds out the bait that the public schools would be freed from state regulations so that each administrator would be free to make his/her school over according to his/her individual whims. The article didn’t say how much funds for each student would be allowed, but my guess is that it would be less than now because of the budget.
Making all schools private would be a tremendous gamble. What makes anyone so sure that turning administrators loose would be good? Several of our institutions have been released from regulations and we will be paying for that error for a long time.
