Nation IN BRIEF : NORTHEAST : Bitter Cold Shatters Records in Vermont

Bitter cold in the Northeast shattered temperature records. Thermometers plunged as low as 44 degrees below zero at Morgan, Vt., which was the low for the 48 states early Sunday. The mercury at Burlington, Vt., hit 27 degrees below zero early Sunday, breaking a record of minus 17 for the date, set in 1910, the National Weather Service said. Five degrees in New York City tied the 1935 record for the date. Albany, N.Y., with 14 degrees below zero broke the 1966 record by 1 degree.
