Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Dole Calls Packwood Accusers Partisan
Senate Republican leader Bob Dole dismissed as largely partisan reports that 13 more women had accused fellow Republican Sen. Bob Packwood of sexual harassment. The Washington Post said that the latest charges brought to 23 the number of women who had told its reporters that Packwood made unwanted advances toward them between 1969 and 1990. But Dole said on CNN that many of those who had accused Packwood “were on the other side politically,” including a woman in Oregon who ran against Packwood as a Democrat in 1974. Packwood, 60, has said repeatedly that he will not give in to a clamor for his resignation, a stance backed by Dole.
